JESUS CHRIST And Newtown CT - Where Is God?

Where was God on Friday, December 14th?  And for that matter during the Virginia Tech shooting?  And the theater shooting in Aurora, CO?  And the Columbine High School shooting?  We can keep going, but you get the idea.  We can also ask this question in respect to the 9/11 attack.  But for this column I want to stay focused on the school attacks.

And when the face of evil confronts us, a godless society turns to Christians and says, "Where is your God?  Why did he let this happen?"  God was there.  And his heart is sad.  satan was there as well and his heart is black with joy at the discord his agent has sown.  Yes, the shooter was evil.  And yes, the shooter was doing the evil one's plans.

Our national spiritual history has led us to this point.  We have kicked God out of our classrooms and made Christians out to be wackos.  We redefine marriage to be what we think it is and not what God has ordained.  Cultural relativism says that whatever you believe is okay and makes you feel happy is fine, and no one can judge you.  Good is bad and bad is good.  Perversion is celebrated in parades down every Main St in America with gay pride events.

And as I mentioned earlier, satan is equally at work to destroy God's creation and drive a wedge between mankind and God.  There is also freewill at play.  One of God's greatest gifts to mankind is our being made in His image, and part of that image means that we have freewill.  God wants us to choose Him.  It will not glorify God if we are forced to worship Him.  Collectively as a nation we have been turning away from God.  And then people question where God is when a tragedy like a school shooting happens!

We live in a fallen world.  The Garden of Eden has been denied to us due to original sin and this world has been corrupted.  This planet slowly is spinning and grinding toward it's last days and the end of times.  Things are actually scheduled to get worse!  Sorry, that can be depressing.  For instance in Matt 24:5-14, Jesus says:

"5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.
9 “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other,11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.  [My emphasis added]
The tragedy at Sandyhook Elementary School should be a clarion call for this nation to throw itself at the foot of the cross. Will we though?  I want there to be a revival, but from what Jesus said in the passage above it sounds like this generation has run out of revivals.  God I pray it isn't so.  Bring this nation revival in the name of Jesus.  There are so many yet to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ as son of God and personal savior.

  1. Well put Paul. You are a blessing to me. I am so happy to see you following and serving Christ Jesus the Lord. I thought back to you when you were in high school, and reflected how it never occurred to me that all these years later I would ever know what kind of man you would become. I am encouraged by what I see from you. Press on and keep shining the light.

  3. Another thing that the world and allot of Christians don't understand is that God is NOT in control, God is sovereign not a controller, the reign of sovereignty acknowledges free will, someone who is in control their will is done 100% of the time, you control your car (I hope), God's will is that none should perish but do we observe that some perish? so if God were in control, He would just control that none would perish, in the book of Genesis God gave man authority over the earth, kinda like a lease for an apartment, the apartment doesn't belong to me but I can do what I want in it, man gave up to satan the authority and satan released two forces on the earth, sin and death, Jesus won back that authority on the cross and gives it back to believers, now satan acts as a thief, a thief doesn't have authority to break into you house, but he does it anyway, you and your authority(baseball bat) is what stops him from breaking in, so what the world doesn't understand is that the world was leased out to man, and just as a land lord cant barge into someones apartment and change things around, so God has limited Himself(mans freewill) but He is coming back(the lease is almost up) and He will take back His earth(apartment) so His will(desire) is that all come to Him but He needs someone to stand in the gap and pray, when we pray it should not just be our shopping list prayer, but God whats on Your heart-what are You doing in the earth, and we should pray those things.
